India ranks 13th globally in QS World Future Skills Index 2027, emerges as a leading AI-ready economy

The ranking highlights both the strengths and challenges facing India's higher education system as AI reshapes employment. India's strong Future of Work performance indicates significant capacity to participate in an increasingly technology-driven economy, but its lower Skills Alignment ranking points to a persistent gap between what graduates learn and what employers require.

For universities and colleges, this reinforces the need to modernise curricula and strengthen programmes around AI, digital technologies, sustainability and other emerging skills. Institutions will also need to focus more closely on learning outcomes, employability and industry relevance rather than relying primarily on expanding enrolment and graduate numbers.

The findings also underline the importance of reskilling and lifelong learning as technologies evolve. Stronger collaboration between institutions, employers, policymakers and industry can help academic programmes respond more quickly to workforce changes.
