Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026 Launched
The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, launched applications for the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026 on 2 June 2026. The flagship initiative aims to attract accomplished Indian-origin researchers, scientists, technologists and professionals from globally reputed universities, laboratories, research institutions and industries to premier government higher-education institutions, national laboratories and research centres across India. The scheme focuses on 13 priority areas, including advanced computing and AI, quantum technologies, semiconductors, cybersecurity, healthcare and MedTech, biotechnology, advanced materials, space and defence, next-generation communications and Industry 4.0.
Why it matters
Attracting internationally experienced researchers can strengthen India's research capacity by bringing specialised expertise, global networks and experience from leading research institutions and industries into the domestic higher-education ecosystem.
The focus on strategically important areas such as AI, quantum technologies, semiconductors, biotechnology and advanced materials also connects the research agenda of higher-education institutions with sectors that are expected to shape India's technological and economic development.
The initiative could also help institutions strengthen international research collaborations and create opportunities for students and early-career researchers to work alongside experienced researchers with global exposure. Its emphasis on research infrastructure and collaboration further highlights the importance of institutional capacity in supporting high-quality research.
The scheme therefore represents a broader push towards strengthening India's ability to attract research talent and build globally competitive research and innovation capabilities.
