QS World University Rankings 2027: How IITs and other top tech institutes fared in the latest rankings
The QS World University Rankings 2027, released on 18 June 2026, evaluated universities using indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact, faculty strength, internationalisation and graduate employability. IIT Delhi emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution at 118th globally, followed by IIT Bombay at 134th and IIT Madras at 170th. IIT Kharagpur ranked 205th, while IISc Bengaluru and IIT Kanpur jointly ranked 221st. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati secured 335th and 349th positions respectively.
Why it matters
The rankings provide an international benchmark for assessing the performance and visibility of India's leading higher education institutions. The strong showing of IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and other technical institutions reflects their performance across areas such as research impact, employer reputation, employment outcomes and international research networks.
The results also illustrate how different institutional strengths contribute to global standing. IIT Delhi recorded improvements in employer reputation, employment outcomes and citations per faculty, while IIT Madras demonstrated particularly strong research impact. IIT Kharagpur's performance was supported by research output and its international research network, while IIT Roorkee recorded a particularly strong citations per faculty score.
For Indian institutions, global rankings can provide useful comparative signals for identifying strengths and areas requiring further improvement. Continued progress in research quality, industry recognition, international collaboration, faculty strength and graduate outcomes can strengthen the global visibility and competitiveness of India's higher education institutions.
